Day 3: New Every Morning

Word

Lamentations 3.23 But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: 22 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; 23 they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 24 “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” 25 The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. 26 It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.

Devotional:

Thus far, we've observed that daily personal devotion nourishes our desires with the One who truly satisfies (Day 1) and enriches our minds with life-giving truth (Day 2). A third crucial aspect of daily devotion is that it enables us to receive the fresh mercy we and those around us need each day.

Scripture frequently describes God as merciful. The Hebrew word for mercy conveys the deep compassion a nursing mother feels for her infant or the concern a loving father has for his children in need. When the Scriptures declare that God is merciful, it means He feels for us in a similar way.

Lamentations 3 reminds us that God's mercies are new every morning. Beginning each day in God's presence allows us to receive His mercy anew and equips us to extend that mercy to others.

The passage further states that by waiting on the Lord and seeking Him, we actively position ourselves to receive God's goodness. What a promise!

Scriptures For Today:

As you read today's Scriptures, read slowly and attentively, allowing the Holy Spirit to speak to you as you meditate on His Word.

Lamentations 3.23-26 But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.

Psalm 103:8-12 "The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us."

Hebrews 4.14-16 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Worship:

Prayer:

Lord, thank You that Your mercies are new every morning. As I begin my day with You, I receive Your mercy and goodness, which flow through me to others.

Listen & Obey:

Spend two minutes in silent, listening prayer. Write down what you sense the Holy Spirit speaking to you. Here are some prompts to assist you:

  • Lord, what do you want to speak to me from these passages of Scripture as I start my day?

  • How do you want me to apply this truth today?

  • Who do I need to share this with today?
