Day 4: The Secret of the Secret Place

Word

Matthew 6.6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Devotional

Another reason that daily time with the Lord matters is that it brings the promise of reward.

When Jesus taught His disciples to pray in the Sermon on the Mount, He revealed what some call the secret of the secret place: as His disciples withdraw from daily life to enter their prayer closets, the Father sees them and rewards them.

Although the Lord owes us nothing, in His goodness and kindness He promises to reward our secret place prayer life. Hebrews 11 builds on this, stating that believing our Heavenly Father rewards those who seek Him is foundational to faith in Him.

By cultivating a personal devotional life, you discover the secret of the secret place.

Scriptures For Today:

As you read today's Scriptures, read slowly and attentively, allowing the Holy Spirit to speak to you as you meditate on His Word.

Matthew 6.5-6 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”

Hebrews 11.6 “And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek Him.”

Luke 11.9-10 "And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.”

Worship

Prayer

Lord, thank you that you see what happens in secret and that you reward secret prayers. This is so so kind. Thank you for the invitation to the secret place and to meet with you there!

Listen & Obey:

Spend two minutes in silent, listening prayer. Write down what you sense the Holy Spirit speaking to you. Here are some prompts to assist you:

  • Lord, what do you want to speak to me from these passages of Scripture as I start my day?

  • How do you want me to apply this truth today?

  • Who do I need to share this with today?
